Group Therapy

-- AVAILABLE IN ENGLISH/SPANISH --

Following your first meeting with your therapist, you may be encouraged to join one of our groups.  In fact, Be-In-Psych emphasizes the utilization of group engagement as an essential part of your treatment.

Group therapy is usually a complement to individual therapy and sometimes medication, but it may be used as a stand-alone treatment modality.

Some of the most comforting words in the universe are ‘me too.’
That moment when you discover that your struggle is also someone else’s,
that you’re not alone, and that others have been down the same road.”

The 11 principles of group therapy and why the group setting is beneficial in your human quest:

  1. Instilling hope
The participating clients are different and at different stages of treatment.  This provides newer clients with encouragement and hope.

  2. Universality
You are part of a group experiencing the issues and tribulations of the human condition.  You are not alone.  Suffering is part of being human.

  3. Imparting information
Group members can provide you with information.

  4. Altruism
As a group member, you have a chance to practice altruism by helping others in the group.  If anything, helping others brings positivity and purpose.

  5. The corrective recapitulation of the primary family group
As a group member, you will be learning and exploring yourself, your childhood experiences, behaviours and feelings.  You will be able to learn how to identify destructive patterns of behaviour.

  6. Development of socialization techniques.
As a member of the group, you can practice being a social animal, not a social media junkie.

  7. Imitative behavior.
As a member of a group, you have a chance to observe and imitate or model positive and helpful behaviours.

  8. Interpersonal learning.
Through interactions and feedback, you learn about who you are and what you want in this life.

  9. Group cohesiveness.
Groups promote a sense of belonging and acceptance.

  10. Catharsis.
When you talk about your feelings, you aid the process of healing.  Your interactions can help relieve pain, guilt, and stress.

  11. Existential factors.
As a member of a group, you better realize that you are responsible for your own actions and the consequences that may follow.
